After
initially meeting some resistance to newcomers in the marine field,
VCI’s reputation gradually won over companies. The work done by
VCI’s consultants in trouble-shooting, high speed in-situ dynamic
balancing, and advising client companies on specific vibration
and related noise problems, has been accepted as being of great
benefit.
From 1980,
VCI developed a Vibration Monitoring and Preventative Maintenance
Programme for the ships machinery of the tanker divisions of two
oil majors. The programme, after consultations with, and amendments
suggested by Lloyds, has been approved by Lloyds, Bureau Veritas,
and American Bureau of Shipping, for use by selected, reliable
shipping companies. Companies instigating this programme have
benefited from early warning of developing faults, allowing timely
ordering of spare parts. Thus the necessity to carry large inventories
of spares on board, with the associated capital outlay, is reduced
